Definition of Sustainability and a Sustainable Prosperity with a Meaningful Quality of Life for ALL

Prosperity means to thrive. It means to have the appropriate abundance necessary to maintain life and where appropriate grow.

Currently there are many different definitions of sustainability. Most of these definitions contain elements for not only allowing life to survive, but more importantly allowing life to thrive in all the important and meaningful ways --- for longer and longer periods of time.

Sustainability does not deny or attack financial viability and stability it enhances it! In fact, in most all of our personal or cultural organizations and systems without financial sustainability the organizations or systems simply could not continue to exist. Sustainability is not something opposed to financial viability it is something essential and critical to achieving it and expanding it in the most meaningful, lasting and satisfying ways.

Sustainability at its physical core is really all about energy exchange, balance and energy regulation. For any living thing (or any organization,) to continue to exist and prosper it must establish energy exchange and balance though proper regulation. The harsh reality that no western business leader or government official will discuss on the record is that billions of jobs will be leaving the global economy permanently. It is not just the outsourcing in the Western economies that is causing this permanent decrease in the creation of new jobs. Western economies will eventually begin to see 10-16% or more unemployment as the new norm and soon even those numbers will continue to rise.

As robotics, bio-technology and nano-manufacturing as well as the new Web 3.0 Internet self-service tools become more developed and widespread the job and career paths of work as we know it today are going to radically and quickly change. There are so many examples of these new technologies increasing productivity and eliminating jobs that will never come back in each of these technology areas that it is unnecessary to mention them here.

We are on a new technologies path that will continue to create fewer and fewer jobs because it will continue to increase productivity through technology and/or, which does not require human participation other than a small portion of technology designers and maintainers. This is the harsh reality that needs to be acknowledged without denial or fear so that humanity can use this information and transition to move itself to an even better level of existence and jobs.

A sustainable prosperity and meaningful quality of life for all does deal with all of the elements mentioned above. Within the new Universe Evolutionary Worldview a sustainable prosperity and meaningful quality of life for all is defined as follows:

A sustainable prosperity would allow for and utilize the total and individual productivity ALL of humanity to create and maintain for itself through fair and appropriate exchanges for expanding periods of time and for greater scales (numbers of people, systems etc.) the following:

1. an initial satisfaction of basic physiological survival, (nutrition, shelter, warmth, basic health care, etc.,) security and safety needs (police, army, courts, etc.,) this would also include creating through productivity an adequate surplus and reserves for care of the ill, the incapacitated, handicapped or elderly who truly are unable to be productive in fair and appropriate exchanges with others and the society.)

2. the establishment of adequate other special reserves to maintain basic physiological survival and safety needs relating to natural disasters and other unpredictable emergencies, then

3. creation of productivity based surpluses that eventually would also provide for and encourage the full satisfaction of all of the other physical, emotional and spiritual needs found on Maslow’s Needs Hierarchy, (in which points a-c here can only be attained in a sustainable way as defined as a way that simultaneously also balances and integrates the appropriate sustainability needs: of other living species, of our planetary biological support systems (clean air water etc.,) and that are also in alignment with the interests and needs of the progressive evolution of the universe as a whole. When we say sustainable prosperity for ALL we mean all individuals, but we do not mean that some individuals can freeload or steal abusing the goodwill of the social group or others. If an individual is of able body and sound mind, can be productive and be in fair and appropriate exchange with others for their work --- they are part of the definition of all! This also means that the social group may and should also provide support for charity situations for the truly infirm or disabled from the surplus and reserves created by the group.

The above is a big new vision, but creates a true win/win/win at the highest levels and it is more that worth the effort and creativity needed because a sustainable prosperity and meaningful quality of life for all creates a far greater sense of increasing satisfaction and well being in the lives of those who practice it and will eventually lead to end of most war and crime. This is simply because it satisfies more of all of a human's needs listed on the Maslow’s Needs Hierarchy and most people find deep value in being able to achieve increasing levels of different meaningful need satisfactions in their lives.

Research has shown that personal life satisfaction is near highest in individuals when basic physiological survival and safety needs are initially met. Life satisfaction goes a tiny bit higher on this life satisfaction bell curve graph when just a few extra comforts or luxuries are added, but then satisfaction level begins to immediately level off and then starts dropping steeply when over consumption occurs with copious luxuries and other non essential material needs and people are not pursuing fulfilling their other higher Maslow’s Needs Hierarchy  needs.

One of the greatest beauties of sustainable prosperity is that through fair and appropriate exchanges it will also help us in monumental ways to create a lasting and meaningful just civilization for all. (Here by lasting we are defining “lasting” in universe time frames where 10 million human generations is hardly even a blink in the billions of years of universe time.)

How do You Create a Sustainable Prosperity and Meaningful Quality of Life for All?

There are many physical actions you can take to live more sustainably:

1. Demand use of the Triple Bottom Line and Full-Cycle Accounting: Sustainable Prosperity is created by all businesses and organizations embracing fair and appropriate exchange, the Triple Bottom Line Principle and product and production Full-Cycle Accounting in managing and determining economic profitability. Full cycle accounting prevents businesses from exporting ANY costs related to the full production cycle of their product to any other entity including taxpayers.

   The Triple Bottom Line also redefines profit in terms of a sustainability, which involves fair and appropriate exchanges, the profit of the stakeholders (investors and employees,) of the organization and the community and environment the organization exists within. Profitability that makes profit for the organization and harms the community and environment is not sustainable or fair exchange profitability.

2. Align all individual and group actions with the progressive directionality of evolution: Probably the single most important way to create sustainable prosperity is to align one's life, actions and goals (or one's organization,) with the progressive directionality of evolution within the universe. To successfully align one's actions (or one's organization's actions,) with the unstoppable directionalized power flow of progressive evolution one would specifically seek to align oneself to the highest degree possible with as many of the day-to-day practical action and attitude principles and "values" of progressive evolution.

Growth can also be seen and well-served by seeing it like the developmental process of the human body in life.

   The body does not keep physically growing forever. At some point the body stops growing physically, but mentally and emotionally (and spirituality for those so inclined,) it can continue growing and maturing (prospering,) indefinitely along the higher non-material needs of Maslow’s Needs Hierarchy.

   Individuals, organizations and a civilization can keep growing and prospering indefinitely if that growth and prosperity is not just focused primarily on non-sustainable physical growth. (Organizations and civilizations can also be seen as seeking the various levels of Maslow’s Needs Hierarchy.)

   Moving from a view of growth and prosperity near exclusively in material terms to a view of growth and prosperity also including and valuing the higher non-material needs of Maslow’s Needs Hierarchy is both a critical and essential part of the sustainable prosperity objectives of the new Universe Evolutionary Worldview and Job One for Humanity, which is reducing human pollution caused severe climate change and preserving the planet’s life support systems.
