Nick Bostrom was voted by the members and visitors of Universe Spirit as our December Futurist Artist of the month.
Nick Bostrom is the Director of the Oxford Future of Humanity Institute. He previously taught for several years at Yale University, in the Philosophy Department and in the Institute for Social and Policy Studies. His background is in physics, computational neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and as well as philosophy.
Dr. Bostrom is one of the world’s leading experts on the ethics and practice of the use of technology to maximize or extend human capacities. He has published widely in this field and he is co-founder and current chair of an international non-profit in this area.
Bostrom has also done extensive work in the foundations of probability theory and on scientific methodology. His book Anthropic Bias (New York: Routledge, 2002) presented the first mathematical theory of observation selection effects. Bostrom is the author of some 70 papers in leading academic journals and popular magazines, and two edited volumes, forthcoming with OUP, on global catastrophic risk and human enhancement ethics. He has also worked briefly as an expert consultant for the European Commission in Brussels and for the Central Intelligence Agency in Washington DC, and he is frequently consulted as a commentator by the media.
